Graduate Studies in Physics at UniMi

The PhD program in Physics, Astrophysics, and Applied Physics at the University of Milan provides high-level, interdisciplinary training across numerous areas of physics, including:

  • Astrophysics
  • Cosmology
  • Quantum Optics
  • Nuclear and Particle Physics
  • Nanotechnology
  • Biophysics
  • Environmental
  • Medical Physics

Active since 1983, the program hosts around 60 students and 70 faculty members and is based at the university’s Città Studi campus. Courses, all taught in English, include advanced subject-specific classes, seminars, and opportunities to present research at international conferences. Students complete a PhD thesis based on original research and receive training in essential soft skills like public speaking, project management, and academic instruction. Teaching assistantships, though optional, provide additional experience in academic instruction.

The program emphasizes international research collaboration with institutions like CERN, NASA, ESA, and various European research facilities, allowing students to gain exposure to advanced research environments and global scientific networks.

Throughout the three-year duration, students are encouraged to participate in interdisciplinary research and to spend part of their studies abroad. By the time of their final defense, most students have published in peer-reviewed journals and are prepared for roles in academia, industry, and sectors such as renewable energy, biomedicine, and technology, with some pursuing entrepreneurial ventures.

In summary, the PhD program combines rigorous scientific training with international collaboration, equipping graduates with both technical expertise and valuable professional skills for diverse career paths.
